May is one of the most beautiful months in Austin. A time when all the hard work you've put into your landscape really starts to shine. It’s the perfect moment to enjoy your outdoor space while also preparing for the summer heat ahead.
Here are a few tips to help your landscape thrive through the transition:
Plan Ahead for Summer Watering
While May often brings some rain, the hot, dry Texas summer is right around the corner. If you don’t have an irrigation system in place, now’s the time to consider one.
Drip irrigation is ideal. It delivers water directly to plant roots, minimizing waste and reducing evaporation.
Not ready for a full system? Try ollas - unglazed clay pots buried in your garden that slowly release water underground where plants need it most. They're an efficient, low-tech way to keep plants hydrated.
Fertilize Smartly
Keep your landscape strong with a fish emulsion and seaweed foliar spray. As temperatures rise, transition to seaweed-only sprays to help plants build resilience against the dry, hot summer conditions typical in Central Texas.
