Did you know our average first frost date here in Austin is between November 21st - 30th? With this in mind, the most important tip we can offer is to keep an eye out for freezing temperatures. Our weather can be quite erratic this time of year and you don't want to lose any plants to an unexpected cold snap. When temperatures are expected to be low, cover fruit trees, sensitive plants and anything planted in the last few months. You can buy freeze cloth at any garden store or bed sheets, blankets, and cardboard are great alternative options. We do not recommend using plastic or tarps.
Just as in summer, using a spray of seaweed directly onto leaves is a great way to help fortify plants against the stresses that come with extreme temperatures. Spray plants weekly for best results.
Quick tip: This is your last chance to spread wildflower seeds. Don’t miss this autumn window or you will have to wait another year. Visit our October Tips for our tips on spreading seeds. You may also want to thin out some of your established wildflowers to allow room for seeds to contact the soil.
